Why do I need a Deed Poll?

In the UK it is recognised that one can change their name through usage alone.

Many organisations and governement departments will however expect to see a Deed Poll before they will truely recognise a person's name change. This is especially the case when applying for a new or updated passport.

When getting married or entering a Civil Partnership, if both parties keep their original names or take the name of one party then a deed poll is seldom required.

If however either or both parties wish to take a different name or double-barrel their names then the marriage certificate of civil partnership agreement is not usually sufficient to represent this change to offical organisations. Under these circumstances we would recommmend a deed poll.
