Do I need a Deed Poll?

Firstly the circumstances under which a Deed Poll is not required:

Upon a marriage or civil partnership where the couple keep their original names or adopt the name of one party
Upon divorce where the Decree Absolute and marriage certificate are available, this can be used by a woman to return to their maiden name.
To change the surname of a child upon adoption if they are taking the host family's surname.

In most other circumstances such as a change of name before a divorce is finalised or a couple taking double-barelled surnames upon marriage, a deed poll will be required.
