Changing a Child's Name

You can get an individual deed poll for any children you hold Parental Responsibility for.

We will only process applications for children who were born and had their birth registered in the UK. This is to protect the welfare of children.

We do not charge more for a child's deed poll.

It is important to obtain the consent of all parties necessary or the name change can be over-turned in the courts. This consent does not need to be in written form but we provide a consent document with children's deed polls so you have a record of any consent given.

Except in unusual circumstances, the name on a birth certificate cannot normally be changed. For more information, you should contact your local Register Office.

If the child is under 16 then the name change can be done without their consent although it can be contested by the child or their representative if the court believes the child understands the circumstances involved. Children who have reached the age of 16 need to give their consent if you are changing their name. We provide consent documents for this purpose.

To change a child's name, all the parties with parental responsibility need to give their consent. Normally this is the parents of the child. For more information, look at our explanation of Parental Responsibility.
